Project and programme management are often confused but they are not the same. In fact, utilising a project manager on a business change programme of any kind such as a business transformation or digital transformation is one of the key reasons why circa 80% of all business transformation programmes and digital/system/IT change programmes fail.
Effective project and programme management also requires experience and knowledge of the type of business transformation or business problem that your project or programme is addressing. So for example, a project manager with lots of experience of building bridges might follow a similar change process to one developing and implementing a new IT system but they obviously won’t be experienced in dealing with technical IT/system issues, software suppliers, software licence and support contracts, business processes, business data, etc.
